Topic Sentences and Paragraphs

  1. Write topic sentences for each of the following short paragraphs taken from a government booklet.
    1. ___________________________________________________________ A round of golf is a walk of four or five miles in the open air. You'll probably have to walk up and down hills as well; it's not all on the flat. And that's not all. Remember, you can't play golf with your bare hands, so you'll be carrying heavy clubs or pulling your trolley every foot of the way.
    2. ___________________________________________________________ The simplest way is to add a little walking to your daily commute to work or your shopping trip. On weekends, you can explore the parks in your area and get to know the local streets. If you feel more ambitious, take a car or bus ride out into the country, where you'll find plenty of footpaths. If you prefer walking in company, there are clubs you can join.
    3. ___________________________________________________________ Just twenty or thirty minutes, two or three times a week, can help keep you fit and active. And no matter how full your day is, the time you spend on exercise will be the best investment you can make.
  2. Choose three of the following topic sentences and write a paragraph for each.
    1. Smoking is a really stupid thing to do.
    2. Bremen is a great town for cyclists.
    3. "If you don't use it, you'll lose it."
    4. There's more to learning a language than grammar rules.
    5. Learning to write in English is like learning another foreign language.
