C. Hedrick, 2.12.98:
I have not seen the manuscript but have been to Mar Saba with a colleague
looking to see it. No one was able to find it there. I have also been to
the Greek Patriarchate library looking to see it but no one was able to find
it. I have, however, seen photographs of the manuscript that are not the
same as those published by Morton Smith. I do think it is an authentic text from antiquity and am
skeptical that it is an ancient forgery, as some have said.
Cordially, Charles Hedrick
C. Hedrick, 3.12.98:
I do not think I can answer your questions satisfactorily. I obviously
think that it is important, because I am investing so much time in it. I do
think that the originals should be critiqued by other scholars, and yes I
think that it should made available to the academic community. I do not
think that it is forever lost--although one report I heard was that the
Greek Orthodox Church was considering its destruction because it "implied"
that Jesus was a homosexual. I do not know for certain who made the
photographs and I have never spoken to a principal; I have always been
dealing through a second party. Talley's comments, if true, suggest that
the photos I have seen come from this later period, since they are not bound
in a volume.
Cordially, Charles Hedrick
> Do you have copies of these photos?
C. Hedrick, 4.12.98:
Yes, but they are not for publication at this point. The permission is not
mine to give.
